When you go into Medicare after leaving private or group-based plans, you will be replacing your annual physical with this one-time free physical that must be done within your first year in Medicare. The purpose of the visit is to help you establish a baseline of your health and identify any current and future risks.
During the 30 to 45-minute appointment your provider will review your medical history, perform a physical examination and recommend screenings and tests that are appropriate both physically and mentally. The goal is to promote early detection and prevention of health problems and provide health education and counseling services.
The appointment is covered under Medicare Part B as long as your doctor accepts Medicare assignment. and there is no cost-sharing unless additional services are provided during the wellness check that are not considered preventive, such as diagnostic tests or treatments. Also, there may be additional preventive services that are not included, so ask your doctor so that you aren’t surprised by a bill later on.
Be sure that you ask for a Welcome to Medicare visit with your provider when you schedule your visit to avoid being charged for a regular visit and while this wellness check is no required, it is 100% covered, so why not take advantage and keep ahead of your health!
